Blog 1- Health and Well Being

Health and Well Being is the Third Sustainable Development Goal.

I chose this goal because I think everyone deserves to have a healthy life.

One of the biggest goal that was put into place in the Health and Well Being SDG is to help increase life expectancy, especially for mothers and their children. The target goal is to reduce the number of deaths from incommunicable diseases by 1/3 by 2030. This would mean that the maternal mortality rate would be reduced to fewer than 70 per 100,000 births. Raising awareness means that more mothers would be aware of the risks of HIV and more resources would be readily available to them.

The Health and Well Being SDG also has a goal to give immunizations to all ages to help everyone stay healthy. Spending $1 Billion in immunization coverage can save 1 Million children's lives each year So far, the amount of deaths of under-5 children has dropped from 9.8 Million in 2000 to 5.4 Million in 2017 (United Nations, 2019). These immunizations are for things such as Polio, Hepatitis, and Measles. (World Health Organization, 2019)

Other health concerns this SDG focuses on are:

  • HIV/AIDS (There are at least 30,000 new cases a year!) (Communicable Diseases, 2019)
  • Malaria
  • Prevention and Treatment of Substance Abuse
  • Preventing Road Traffic Accidents
  • Family Planning and Reproductive Health Resources
This goal is attainable because from 2019-2030 a lot can be done. Each year, progress is made and every little step adds up. So many people are without any type of healthcare and I believe everyone deserves the resources to have a healthy life.

  1. Elizabeth,

Good health and well-being of any and every nation is a very important goal we should be working towards. There are several issues surrounding this topic, one of them being HIV/AIDS, as you mentioned in your blog. Awareness for HIV/AIDS is a very crucial step that every country needs promote. In addition to that, substance abuse is also a big issue, when it comes to good health and well-being of any nation. Opiod crisis surrounding this has been a recent issue that United States has been dealing with.

It is great that you have chosen this topic. I would be very interested to learn how all of these issues affect different countries differently.

  2. Hi Elizabeth!
I can definitely relate to your blog and what you had to say on it. I as well chose my topic on good health and well being. I am currently studying public health and it has everything to do with what i want to do as my career. It is so important to help and care about the well being of our community as a whole and do something about the plenty of issues we currently have like the ones you listed on your post. There is so many people that lack the ability to be able to have the same health care as others do. However, I believe that we can definitely do something to help that and much more. By helping to solve these issues we could be saving so many lives all at once by preventing from people getting sick or being injured and providing them with the support they need if they ever need the help.
